It’s been a couple of crazy weeks for me and I’m finally able to sit down and talk about a seminar I was able to help out with. The “Give the Gift of a Gi – BJJ Seminars for Kids” kick-off seminar was a huge success. It was held on October 26th at Foster Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Kent, Washington. Quite a few Black Belts shared their expertise; Kris Shaw, Cindy Hales, Michelle Wagner, James Foster, and Jean Freitas. There were three different seminars for three different age groups. With this grouping model each seminar ended up being the perfect size. In total there were about 55-60 kids, which is a great turn out. Of those kids, I would guess about 10 had never tried Jiu-Jitsu including my two little nephews. The seminar they attended was their first day of Jiu-Jitsu. I credit the quality of the seminar with the fact that they both enrolled to train the next week. Yes, I’m a proud uncle.
Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending Hannette's all Women seminar in San Jose CA. The six techniques that we learned I never want to forget because I never want to have to learn them again! Her seminar is a balance of technique drill and spar. You work the positions you've learned. All the techniques chain together. It is so logical, Hannette could have a second career in computers if she wanted.
As for Andre, well I've never trained with him but if he's her coach...
Please attend tomorrow. Send me a Seminar review.Hannette Staak & Andre Terencio

.Picking My Mentor’s Brain, an interview with Leka Vieira
By Marichiel Ewert
I started to train under Leka Vieira when Leka moved to the United States in 1999. I was training at Rigan Machado’s in Torrance, CA and heard that she was visiting from Brazil. I hadn’t heard of her before as I was new to the Jiu-Jitsu community. All I knew was what I was told: She was bad ass and that she got her black belt when she was 16. I was misinformed about her receiving her black belt at the age of 16, but you could imagine how intimidating she sounded, never the less. Terrified and intimidated is how I felt when I caught a glimpse of her as I entered the academy that night. She was cut, lean, and ripped. The most intimidating thing about her look was she was nearly bald.
Gracie Barra instructors Ricardo Testai, Marcelo Lacerda and Bruno Rocha stopped by Buena Park Police Department to show members of the team a few BJJ positions.
Ricardo Testai, of Gracie Barra Anaheim Hills, use to teach Special Forces in Brazil. His experience translates sport Jiu-Jitsu to real world application.

When asked S.W.A.T. Team member Eric Burciaga if he would see hand-to-hand fighting within the year he said. "Most definitely. The bad guys don't want to go to jail and some of those guys are learning this stuff. We need to learn it too."
They learned breakfalls, defensive recovery from the ground, dogding a punch, takedowns, and a arm choke finish.
After the seminar the police officers got to go a few rounds with the Gracie Barra black belts. Everyone was sweaty and smiling. Only the black belts managed to get submissions.

We are excited that Leticia Ribeiro is coming back to Texas to teach another all women seminar, this time in Austin. After last year's success in Dallas and San Antonio she is coming back with her protegee Bia Mesquita to teach at Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (http://www.gracieaustin.com). It's especially exciting since the gym in Austin is run by a female brown belt Christy Thomas. So it is a total women powered event.
