In the wild world of sports that so many of us enjoy, there is never a dull moment.  We love our traditional games and athletes, however, there are some times when the specific sport you enjoy needs a little shot in the arm to help bring it along with the time.

A perfect example of this would be the super-slick back take, the berimbolo.  Utilized in order to obtain back mount, this transition is a tricky one and should be drilled over-and-over if you want to really get the move down pat.

One Brazilian Jiu Jitsu player that has this transition down pat is Rafael Mendes.  If you’ve followed my work, you know I’m a big supporter of both Mendes brothers.  Rafael is notorious for using the berimbolo to help advance his position and gain the upper hand on his opponents.

Review: iThlete App Review...(Bringing HRV Into the Mix) Featured

Written by

Athletes at the highest levels have access to the latest technology as they strive for peak performance.  They and their coaches are monitoring multiple stimuli, both external and internal, to determine what training loads achieve the perfect balance between improvement and recovery.  As we all know without adequate recovery you’re not going to be able to train effectively and your chances of injury increase.  Recent innovations and products have opened the door so that even recreational athletes can utilize products that just a few years ago were cost prohibitive to all but well-funded athletic programs.

Heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring can be used to quantify your baseline level of fitness, track you daily recovery, develop a personal strategy for peaking, and identify trends from changes in your training regimen.  HRV based program have been developed for professional athletes of all sports, including the UFC, and may represent the next step in individualized training programs.

Gi Review: Inverted Gear (A3L)

Written by

"Inverted Gear was founded in February of 2012.  We had grown tired of the current trend of high price pre-order limited edition gis, which meant months of waiting and small window of purchase.  We strive to bring a high quality product at an affordable price…
We are not for the tough guys, our logo is a clear indication of what we are about.  We are for the guys and girls that want to be on the mat…
Be part of the Panda Nation”

I was introduced to Inverted Gear about a year ago.  I was competing in my first IBJJF tournament and kept seeing these gis with upside down pandas on them.  They were everywhere, seemed to fit well and the panda logo is pretty cool.  It wasn’t until a few months ago that I was able to finally get my hands on one of these gis and see what all the fuss was about.  BTW, Inverted Gear has the nicest gi bag that I’ve ever seen.  My oldest daughter fell in love with it instantly and has claimed it as her own.

Modern Jiu Jitsu: Full Set Breakdown Featured

Written by

Overview
In the words of the man himself, Modern Jiu Jitsu, as my DVD illustrates, isn’t new jiu jitsu just a better way to do the things we have always been doing. We aren’t reinventing the wheel, we are using better application of technique to make the wheel better.”  Caio Terra

Caio Terra’s Modern Jiu Jitsu series was released in early 2012 to almost universal praise (also here).  The set is available as 4 DVDs or 8 apps from iTunes and is available at Mobile Black Belt.  This set has already gained the reputation as a go to instructional for beginner to intermediate practitioners.  The combination of stunning visuals, first-rate audio and expert instruction ensures that this set will stand the test of time.  In this article, I’ll be covering the entire set.  Included will be my easy to follow mindmaps (flow charts) that can be downloaded from a link at the end of the article.

Teaching as a Purple Belt Featured

Written by

In March 2011, Roger Gracie and Kev Capel promoted me to purple belt. Two months later, I moved to Bristol, where conveniently there was a BJJ academy around the corner. Due to the colour of our belts, in May 2011 the head instructor in Bristol asked the other purple belt and I if we wanted to help out with classes. I jumped at the chance, as instructing jiu jitsu has been a long-term goal of mine for some time. I had some experience leading undergraduate seminars on literature, but discussing poetry is quite different to teaching a physical skill set like jiu jitsu.
