Gear Review: X-Guard Customized Rashguard

Written by

Intro:

Over the last year X-Guard Brand has made a name for itself by producing high-quality gis at affordable prices (<$140 with shipping included).  Something that doesn’t get as much attention is their offering of customized rashguards.  X-Guard sublimates all of there own rashguards in house and were kind enough to send me one of their “Save 2nd Base” breast cancer awareness rashguards early last month.  I liked the rashguard so much that I purchased another one shortly thereafter with my school logos on it.  X-guard’s customized gear includes rashguards, board shorts and patches.

Per X-Guard Brand:

“At X-Guard Brand Fight Wear, we believe that fashion, quality, and performance go hand-in-hand. Our premium jiu jitsu kimonos, IBJJF approved rash guards, and fight shorts have been mat tested and are cage approved. We listen to our customers, read reviews, and participate in the sport which helps us continually push our Jiu-Jitsu / MMA fight wear to the next level.”

Joint Supplementation for the BJJ Athlete Featured

Written by

Glucosamine is important for maintaining elasticity, strength, and durability of the cartilage in movable joints.  Glucosamine also appears to have anti-inflammatory properties and could be used to promote the maintenance of joint function and to decrease pain in individuals suffering from osteoarthritis (OA). Glucosamine may act synergistically with chondroitin sulfate. Chondroitin sulfate is a critical compound in connective tissue and joint cartilage.   Supplementation with chondroitin sulfate is claimed to support the maintenance of strong, healthy cartilage and joint function.

The use of glucosamine based products for osteoarthritis and other issues related to joint pain began decades ago and has become a mainstay in many medicine cabinets across the country.  The purported benefits are improvement in joint pain and protection of the joints.  There are dozens and dozens of studies that show a benefit from using glucosamine supplementation and nearly as many demonstrating that it has no more efficacy than a placebo.

As practitioners of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu we put our joints under strain on a regular basis.  Aches and pains have become an accepted price that we pay for training but there may options available to you that can lessen or eliminate the pain.

Gi Review: Diaz Bros by Lucky Gi

Written by

Intro:
Lucky Gi was founded by Scotty Nelson who also brought us On The Mat (OTM) way back in the Stone Age of BJJ.  Scotty’s obsession with gis began in the 90’s while training in Brazil and has been growing ever since.  After years of traveling, training and researching he decided to make his own gis and to break with tradition by using factories in China, instead of Pakistan, and to experiment with other fabrics, notably bamboo.

Lucky’s gis have included the bamboo Fleur-De-Lis and signature fighter gis such as the Raphael Lovato Jr, Jeff Glover and currently the Diaz Brothers gi (also in black).  For this review we’ll be looking at the Diaz Bros gi.  The gi has a 550gm pearl weave top, 12oz bull denim pants, sizing options for everyone (tall & husky sizes are available and you can mix & match the jacket to pants) and comes with a travel bag.

Top 3 Conditioning Tools For BJJ

Written by

Time To Take Action is NOW

No time is better than now.  Take action now and start your journey of developing the strength and conditioning that you need in order to train or compete at the level that you desire.

When deciding on which piece of equipment that I choose to use with my clients, there are a couple of things that I take into account:
1.    Cost
What is my initial investment?  Do I have to keep buying additional   equipment?
2.    Versatility
Can I use it with my athletes that are dropping body fat, increasing lean muscle, conditioning, rehab, etc.
3.    Space
How big is it?  Can it be stored away?  Can it be moved from training facility to BJJ Academy.
4.    Longevity
How long will it last you?  Or will you be buying a new piece of equipment every couple of months and throwing money down the drain.

Now that we understand some of the reasons that I picked these pieces of equipment…Here is my list of the “Top 3 Conditioning Tools For BJJ”:

1.    Ultimate Sandbag

The Gracie US Nationals Return to

TheFitExpo™, January 19-20

At the Los Angeles Convention Center

(Los Angeles, Calif…November 29, 2012) Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling tournaments will be front and center as The Gracie US Nationals return for their sixth year to the West Coast’s largest fitness event, TheFitExpo Los Angeles, Saturday and Sunday, January 19-20, 2013 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 South Figueroa Street, West Halls A & B.

As always, Rose Gracie will work in conjunction with the TheFitExpo to create the ideal environment and venue for a top-notch competition. TheFitExpo is bringing industry leaders together for a weekend of Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, fitness challenges and much more.  On Saturday, January 19 at 12 noon, Rose Gracie will present their annual Achievement Award to the recipient who best represents the standards of the sport set forth by Grandmaster Helio Gracie.

“We’re honored to once again be working with Rose Gracie from the legendary Gracie family on hosting The Gracie US Nationals at our 10th Anniversary event,” said TheFitExpo Executive Director, Erin Ferries.  “She always brings a classic competition that unites participants and attendees.”

In January 2012, Gracie made significant changes to the rules of both adult and children's competitions at The Gracie US Nationals, as her desire was to bring back the original Jiu-Jitsu that her grandfather, Grandmaster Helio Gracie, envisioned from the beginning.  Gracie switched the point system to a submission-only event. This prevents several issues that were previously faced in competition and it gives the competitor 100% power over the outcome of the match.  Also, in an effort to keep the sport pure, random testing of competitors for performance enhancing drugs will be done again this year.

BJJ Conditioning With The Prowler

Written by

prowler

PLEASE STAY AWAY…CHAMPIONS AT WORK!!!

The Prowler is one of those tools that my athletes hate to see me bringing over, but love the results that come from training with it.  Here are my top 3 exercises that I use with all my BJJ athletes with the Prowler:

1.  Prowler Push
I have my BJJ athletes do a Prowler Push in order to develop their work capacity and to help build muscle with very little stress on the body.  During BJJ training or matches, we are forced to be explosive in very short periods of time…If we do not train like that, how do we expect to perform like that when it counts.

Try starting off with 2-3 sets with each set consisting of 6-8 reps. Remember that here the reps should be kept low because we are working on being powerful and explosive every time we push the sled.

2.  Prowler Pull
The Prowler Pull offers the same types of benefits as the push: work capacity and help build muscle with very little stress on the body.  To perform this exercise you are going to have to strap either a TRX Suspension Trainer or a set of ropes to hold on to.  The key to this exercise is to remember that we do not want to use our legs.  Just focus on keep your arms straight and pulling in an explosive manner towards you.

Number of sets and rep ranges are the same as the Prowler Push.

3.  Prowler Sprints
This is definitely an all time favorite with all my athletes.  This exercise is not only great for building up work capacity, but also increasing speed, power, and recovery.

I normally set up two cones 20 yards apart and the distance that they athlete covers will depend on where the athlete is in their training program.  Remember to always keep the time that your athletes complete the sprint in…this will allow them to compete against their own time.

Now turn off your computer…Head to the gym...And take the necessary steps with the Prowler to win your next tournament.

Gear Review: DOorDIE Fightshorts Review

Written by

Intro:

Early last month we reviewed the Hyperfly gi by DOorDie.  Since that review was posted Xande Ribeiro, one of the faces of DOorDie, has been terrorizing competitors in competition winning gold at weight and absolute at the No-Gi Worlds last month.  While slicing thru his competition Xande was sporting DOorDIE’s new fightshorts.  The fightshorts are intended for stand-up and ground work.  For the last two months I’ve been using and abusing them during training.

 Per Do Or Die:
Your battle will be here before you know it.  It’s time to get yourself ready for combat and show the world you know what DO OR DIE is all about….YOU CAN’T TEACH HEART

Interactive White Belt Curriculum

Written by

The great thing about mindmaps is that they provide an easy-to-follow visual reminder of the techniques and positions covered.  For most this is quicker to review and easier to assimilate than text notes.  You’re also able to get a birds-eye view of how everything is connected and (hopefully) improve your understanding those intricacies.

The downside is that without the source material (DVD, book, magazine, etc) they’re usefulness is greatly limited.  Don’t get me wrong, they’re cool to look at but how much are you really getting out of it?  So what can be done about that?

Gear Review: Luta Rashguards and Fight Shorts

Written by

LUTA is a unique fight wear company that focuses not only on innovative product design but also on their strong sense of social awareness and responsibility.  As a company they share 50% of their profits with Fight for Peace International, an international organization that opens and runs academies combining boxing, martial arts as well as educational and personal development programs.  The academies are in areas of the world where there are few opportunities for young people that don’t involve crime and violence.  For this review LUTA sent their two most popular products: the MMA Performance rash guard and MMA fight shorts as well as their newest innovation the Laser Tech rash guard.  My first introduction to LUTA was at BJJHQ when the MMA Performance rash guard was posted and promptly sold out.  Luta offers rashguards, fight shorts, boxing training gear, and clothing.

From the LUTA website:
Born in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Luta is a new fightwear and lifestyle clothing brand that brings together real fight performance, favela street style and a genuine social mission.

LUTA, Portuguese for fight, was founded for three reasons:
1st - There was a need for really advanced performance fightwear and trainingwear.
2nd - I wanted to pay homage to the positive energy in the favelas and the strength I’d witnessed training young champions there since 2000.
3rd - I wanted to support those young champions in communities that suffer from crime and violence, by providing Fight for Peace with a profit share in the company.
Luke Dowdney

One last thing before the review.  To celebrate LUTA's new US Website we've gotten a 25% off coupon code good for all purchases from the US shop!  The code is:  BJJVIP and will be valid until December 19th, 2012.
