Macaronic Empties

Written by

Today, I hit my first spinning juji gatame in live rolling. The immediate double bonus points such an event applies to BJJ’s regular endorphin rewards were slowly overtaken by a creeping nausea.  I hate spinning juji gatames, and not because until very recently my attempts to land them have involved spinning with less grace than drunk minor-league figure skaters. I hate them because spinning is an incredibly poor adjective for juji gatame, as the two terms are not from the same language (or language family. Or alphabet system.)

First, let me offer a definition: macaronic, per Merriam Webster, means “characterized by a mixture of two languages.” I am not against macaronic language per se; I do however feel that, like mixing ice cream flavors, it must be done with great care and circumspection. The brash smashing together of terms that has become the norm in Jiu Jitsu is disrespectful of the beauty of both source languages and of the potential of macaronic wordplay. Let the wrestlers grunt out ungainly combinations of signifiers; such quasi-linguistic noise is unbecoming of an art as elegant as ours.

Is Hand Health Holding You Back? Featured

Written by

My name is Adam Glass. I am 30 years old and I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you have heard of me before, it was probably not for BJJ. I am a white belt at Greg Nelsons Academy. BJJ is one of my favorite sports but that is not what I love most. I am a grip strength athlete and strongman. Many would make the argument I have pound for pound some of the strongest hands on the planet. My grip training roughly consumes 14-18 hours a week, 52 weeks a year.  I tell you all of that to drill home one point – I know a lot about hand pain and how to resolve hand pain. I am going to share with you some of the best methods for improving your hand health and a few simple movements that will be high pay off for not only your BJJ but all areas of your life.

Many people who read this currently do not have hand pain and that is a good thing. Rather than pass this article over, I would like you to consider adding these movements to your training now. It is much easier to do these things and never get serious pain rather than develop pain and try to get yourself out.

Written by

Have you ever wanted to pick the brain of someone that has been competing in the Worlds since the very first one?  Maybe you'd like to talk to a 4th degree black belt that's trained with luminaries such as Ze Mario, Ricardo Liboria and Murila Bustamante?  Are your interests more aligned with MMA and you'd like to know how world-class wrestllers such as Randy Couture, Dan Henderson and Urijah Faber adapted to BJJ for MMA?  What if you could get insight into all of these aspects of the sport that we love just by talking to one person?  Enter Cassio Werneck.  Cassio has a school in Sacremento where he trains himself, his students and a who's who's of MMA athletes in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Cassio was kind enough to answer a few questions for us and share his insight into the evolution of BJJ.

Gi Review: Samurai (A3L) by Ronin

Written by

Intro:
“Ronin is a subsidiary of Kinji San, a family owned and operated martial arts supplier that has been in business since 1976.  As consumers ourselves, we strive to treat our customers as we would like to be treated. It is our sincere desire to provide you with the best quality products at affordable prices. We offer superior service, a knowledgeable staff and quick shipping.”

I first came across Ronin brand gis last year after reading Aesopian’s review of their Fighter model gi (currently on sale for ~$80).  After a few emails with Doug at Ronin I was able to get my hands on their newest model, the Samurai.  The Samurai is available in white, blue and black.  The gi is available in the traditional sizes (A1 thru A5) as well as long (A1L thru A3L) and is priced at $139.95 (white) or $159.95 (black & blue) (which includes free US Shipping).

There is a wide range of personalities you will come across being involved in martial arts. Some individuals leave a bad taste in your mouth raising awareness of ignorance that festers in our community, while others will leave an everlasting impression of the positive people enriching our art and the world today.

Not too long ago I got the opportunity to meet an extraordinary group of individuals who take acts of kindness to a whole another level.  Taking a break from Southern California I decided to pack my bags and venture to Denver, Colorado. In an effort to make the best of my experience I decided to compete at a tournament there while also hoping to get some great training at an academy.

Known for its outdoor activities and the famous gold rush Colorado is also known for having some great BJJ teams one of which happens to be the Relson Gracie Jiu-jitsu Academy Colorado run by head Instructor Steve Hordinski.

“The company was founded in 2011 by Kári Gunnarsson, an avid grappling/BJJ practitioner and competitor.  Kári has competetive experience in both MMA and Muay Thai.  The main goal of the company is to provide MMA/Grappling/BJJ gear of the highest quality, and just as importantly, with crisp/fresh designs.

We don’t feel that the majority of MMA brands out there appeal to us, as we are not attracted to the “in your face” style that most companies seem to cultivate, so we aim to create crisp cool designs (though not necesarily minimalistic). We take our inspiration more from surf clothing than from other MMA brands, and try to incorporate that design feeling into clothing that is meant to withstand MMA/Grappling rather than surfing.”  Odin Fightwear

Odin Fightwear’s no gi offerings include rashguards (blue and brown) as well as board shorts.  The rashguards are 40€ and board shorts are 45€.  This price includes the EU tax.  Those outside the EU will pay ~25% LESS (~$30 usd & ~$44 usd respectively).  The gear has fully sublimated graphics, distinctive styling and a few features that you don’t typically find in rashguard.

I met Adam about a year and a half ago.  I had just started training BJJ and I saw him and some of our fighters working out.  I didn’t really think much of it.  A few weeks later I was coming to the gym with my daughters, Lilly and Harper, and Adam stopped what he was doing to talk to me and to both of them.  Ever since then the three of them chat for a minute whenever they see each other.  I asked Adam to spend a few minutes with me and talk about his grapping training with Team Jones while on TUF 17.  If you’re looking for any house drama or info about his KO from Uriah Hall it’s not here.  What you do have is a glimpse into grappling training during a season of the Ultimate Fighter.

Why and How to Keep a BJJ Notebook Featured

Written by

A technique notebook is one of the most powerful Brazilian jiu-jitsu training aids. I’ve been keeping one on and off since my first judo class and have found that my rate of progression is directly proportional to my diligence with updating my BJJ notebook. Jiu-jitsu isn’t something that’s easy to describe using words alone and a couple of people at my gym have asked to see my notes, so I figured I’d put together an article explaining why and how I do it.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a complex martial art. For every technique – takedowns, sweeps, guard passes, submissions, escapes… – there are multiple counters. And multiple recounters for every counter. Need a visual on that? Check out some BJJ flow charts. How is a person supposed to remember all of this? Keeping a jiu-jitsu notebook helps.
