Dan Hardy and Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome

Written by

An article was posted was posted earlier today on the future of Dan Hardy in the UFC and in combat sports.  Please check out the full article if you’re interested.  In a nutshell the CSAC failed Dan on a physical and discovered that he has Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome (WPW).  Dan’s not getting surgery, feels fine and wants to keep fighting for another year or so.  The information in this article is purely for entertainment value and is not intended to diagnose, treat or replace the advice of a qualified medical professional.

Heart Rate Monitors While Training BJJ Featured

Written by

Just about every conditioning program out there uses heart rate monitors to some extent.  They’re great tools for reviewing, tracking and implementing your training.  Is it necessary for everyone?  Probably not but if you’re interested in your training and performance a HR monitor is widely considered to be necessary equipment.  As a practitioner of a sport that requires an enormous amount of conditioning and fitness you’d think that we’d see HR monitors everyday but we don’t.  The main reason is that traditionally a watch has been required to act as the receiver.  We can’t wear watches while rolling and therefore we’re not able to monitor our HR during the activity that we’re actually trying to improve.  But what if you could?  Would you like to see what flow rolling looks like on a HR monitor chart?  What about going 100%?

Gear Review: Damage Control Custom Mouth Guards

Written by

I’ve been participating in some form of sports for most of the last 3 decades.  In that time I’ve had to adjust to different types of protective gear.  In some cases it was easy, others took a while. One thing that I’ve never been able to use is a mouth guard.  My early attempts at using boil & bite guards resulted in frequent gagging until I’d cut it down so much that it barely covered my canines.  I broke down and purchased a nano-sized gel mouth guard about a year ago and while it did fit better I couldn’t roll in it at all.  I felt like I was choking myself.  I spend enough time getting crushed and the last thing I need is to make it harder for me to breath.  At this point I gave up.  I wasn’t meant to wear a mouth guard and I was OK with that.  Then I read a review from Sally Arsenault extolling the virtues of the Bubba Teeth Mouthguard by Damage Control.  I’d been tapped several times that week from jaw pressure (while defending chokes) and decided to give it one more shot to see if someone could finally give me a mouth guard that I could wear.

Post-Workout Nutrition for Grapplers

Written by

When I first started playing organized sports about thirty years ago we were all told that water was all you needed after and during practice (it wasn’t called training in those dark ages).  Next came Gatorade.  Gatorade has been around since the late 1960’s and really took off in the 80s when the formula was purchased from the University of Florida.  Everyone was drinking Gatorade to “Be Like Mike” or whatever spokesman was popular at the time.  Fast forward another decade and someone figured out that adding amino acids (protein) to these drinks may be an even better option after training.  As you can see, this is not a new topic by any stretch of the imagination but I’m hoping that I’ll be able to give you a basic and practical guideline on what you need after training, why you need it and how to use it in your training.

Crippling Jiu-Jitsu: a Leglock Article Roundup Featured

Written by

On November 4, 2012, my Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach, Adam Ryan, took gold in the senior 2 black belt category of the IBJJF 2012 World No-Gi Championships, submitting his opponent with a pretty brutal ankle lock. The Dynamic MMA team were all pretty excited to watch this, and in honour of Adam’s leglock finish, I figured I’d put together a quick compilation of leglock-related articles that I’ve written over the years. These articles were published in different places under different sets of publication guidelines, so there’s some repetition, but they give a good overview. The flow is: introduction, examples of leglocks in action, learning resources, and dealing with knee or ankle injuries.

[Editor's Note:  This article originally appeared here at Jeff's Blog Jiu Jitsu Vortex.]

Interview with Bia Mesquita 2013 Pan Absolute Finals

Written by

2013 Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championships

Bea Mesquita vs Gabi Garcia in the Absolute Semi-Finals

Gabi Garcia is larger than many women and has an incredible base of strength which makes her a force in the absolute division. It can lead to fights of strength vs technique. And in most instances Gabi comes out on the winning side. Bea Mesquita, 2012 Pan Champion in the the lightweight division is fighting out of her weight class against Gabi Garcia in the 2013 Pan absolute finals tomorrow. They have fought several times and Bea keeps changing her game to adapt to the strength and size of her opponents in the open division. Tomorrow she needs to get through Gabi, to win the Absolute Division title. Kris, from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Legends Magazine, talks with Bea about Gabi and her strategy tomorrow.

Kris: Many women will not fight in the absolute division if they think they are going to meet Gabi in the brackets. What is going through your mind when you put your name on the paper to fight in the Absolute Division?

Bea: I'm not afraid of her, I think she is fine. Black belt girls fight like it's their job. These girls are always training for the fight. If they are not rolling hard they are training for position. My fight against her is as difficult as it is against anyone else. I put my name in there, and I have to fight her, just as anyone else will. Everybody has a chance to win.

Macaronic Empties

Written by

Today, I hit my first spinning juji gatame in live rolling. The immediate double bonus points such an event applies to BJJ’s regular endorphin rewards were slowly overtaken by a creeping nausea.  I hate spinning juji gatames, and not because until very recently my attempts to land them have involved spinning with less grace than drunk minor-league figure skaters. I hate them because spinning is an incredibly poor adjective for juji gatame, as the two terms are not from the same language (or language family. Or alphabet system.)

First, let me offer a definition: macaronic, per Merriam Webster, means “characterized by a mixture of two languages.” I am not against macaronic language per se; I do however feel that, like mixing ice cream flavors, it must be done with great care and circumspection. The brash smashing together of terms that has become the norm in Jiu Jitsu is disrespectful of the beauty of both source languages and of the potential of macaronic wordplay. Let the wrestlers grunt out ungainly combinations of signifiers; such quasi-linguistic noise is unbecoming of an art as elegant as ours.

Is Hand Health Holding You Back? Featured

Written by

My name is Adam Glass. I am 30 years old and I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you have heard of me before, it was probably not for BJJ. I am a white belt at Greg Nelsons Academy. BJJ is one of my favorite sports but that is not what I love most. I am a grip strength athlete and strongman. Many would make the argument I have pound for pound some of the strongest hands on the planet. My grip training roughly consumes 14-18 hours a week, 52 weeks a year.  I tell you all of that to drill home one point – I know a lot about hand pain and how to resolve hand pain. I am going to share with you some of the best methods for improving your hand health and a few simple movements that will be high pay off for not only your BJJ but all areas of your life.

Many people who read this currently do not have hand pain and that is a good thing. Rather than pass this article over, I would like you to consider adding these movements to your training now. It is much easier to do these things and never get serious pain rather than develop pain and try to get yourself out.
