Improve On Mat Strength With Loaded Carries

Written by

Jiu-Jitsu Stregnth Conditioning

I have studied some of the top strength and conditioning coaches in the world, like Dan John, Mike Boyle, and Robert Dos Remedios, and although they may do some things different, one thing that they all do the same, is they believe that  “Loaded Carry(s)” is a great way to improve your strength.

Now you may ask, “How will Loaded Carry(s) help my BJJ Game?”
Lets break down some of the benefits:
1.    Performing this exercise will demand a tremendous amount of core strength
2.    Another way to increase lean muscle because of time under tension
3.    Enhanced proprioception
4.    Great for conditioning

Now if you think that these four benefits cannot help your game, than I am sorry -I don’t know how much more I can help you.  For the rest of the BJJ community that believes that these benefits will extremely help their game, here are my top 3 “Loaded Carry” exercises utilizing the Ultimate Sandbag (USB).

Academy Spotlight: Oceanside Jiu-jitsu

Written by

Oceanside Jiu-Jitsu

Beaches, piers, harbors, and watersports these are some of the things that come to mind when you think of Oceanside, California. A city that promotes a healthy and active lifestyle there never seems to be a dull moment living in this town. Hoping to bring a little more excitement to the melting pot  the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu has invaded this city thanks in part to the contributions of Ribeiro Association Affiliate school Oceanside Jiu-jitsu.

Established in 2009 Oceanside Jiu-Jitsu offers the best instruction in Southern California. At this great academy one will learn the core fundamental techniques that will aid them in developing a strong game capable of competing at the world class level and becoming a complete well-rounded practitioner offensively and defensively.

With years of experience in the field, head instructors Nat Soli and Brendan Guccione are the perfect mentors any person could ever ask for. Their ability to break down techniques to young children, teenagers, and adults gives the individual clear awareness of what is being taught which helps in their rapid progression in skill level.

In The Shadow of Sun Tzu, Chess & Jiu Jitsu

Written by

I train at Heroes Martial Arts in San Jose, CA. Its a very cool school. I don’t say that from a place of arrogance. We have some tough dudes there. Some true champions, some national champions and some unknown, ridiculous rugged folks on that mat.

Our head instructor Alan “Gumby” Marques is pretty amazing. He’s a quiet dude. Very deep intellectually and technically. He never says or does anything more than he needs to. I don’t say that lightly to suggest he’s lazy.

On the contrary he’s got a serious work ethic. One so big that when his instructor Ralph “The Pitbull” Gracie handed him a black belt...it was the one Ralph took off his waist, that he handed to Gumby.

On your first day of class at Heroes, you’ll be taught the essence of what Gumby things jiu jitsu is about, and life: Safety, Position, Finish.

That's it.

Sounds so simple but its so complex.

No Gym… No Problem

Written by

If anyone knows me, they know that I like to talk and meet new people.  When I am training, I always like to find out more about the people that I am training with other than their favorite move to tap me out with.  I like to find out things like how long they have been training, their family, and especially if they are strength training.  I have asked some of the top competitors that I have taken privates with, like Claudio Calasans, Demian Maia, Andre Galvo, the Mendes Brothers, etc, this same questions and the answer is always the same…YES.

So why is it that most of the people that we find ourselves training with on an every day basis at the academy, are not strength training.  Here are my top 2 answers that I am given:

1.    Strength is not needed for BJJ
2.    Don’t have the extra money for a gym membership

Both are fine answers, but unfortunately completely wrong.  Let us address one issue at a time, the fact of the matter is BJJ is a physical sport that is full of grabbing, wrestling, and lets not forget mental toughness.  Yes I agree that BJJ has always and will always be based on leverage, but lets not forget that without the ability to fight off the feeling of the lactic acid buildup in your muscles, you could possible lose a match in the final minutes…a match that should very well of been yours for the taking.

Gi Review: Gorilla Fight Gear Slim Cut Apeman

Written by

Gorilla Fight Gear: Slim Cut Apeman, Crystal Weave, A4S

Intro:
Gorilla fight gear is starting to make a name for themselves by offering a high quality, competition ready gis in so many different sizes that everyone will find something to fit them. I’m reviewing the Slim Cut Apeman crystal weave in A4S.  They also have offerings for more traditional sizes and for stockier athletes.

The gi top is made out of a 550gr crystal weave jacket (similar to pearl weave but a little softer and heavier), triple stitching throughout, includes a mouth guard pocket and a thick rubber core lapel. The 12oz twill pants feature 5 loops, a crystal weave gusset and knee reinforcements that go all the way to the cuff.
