Read about my friend Jocelyn Chang and her black belt super fight with breast cancer.

What would you do if at the age of 39 you were diagnosed with cancer? Would you fall into a depression and let the sickness win or would you fight back with determination? For anyone in this situation it becomes a defining moment in their life and for some the trial becomes a turning point to do even greater things than they had before they were sick. Most of us will never have to face such a challenge but even still we can learn from and be inspired by those that have.

Jocelyn Chang is one of those people and a true inspiration. A Jiu-Jitsu black belt who trained under Leka Vieira, she has always been the coolest of cucumbers. And when she discovered she had breast cancer, that didn’t change.

You can’t tell by looking at her that she has ever been sick. She still stands tall at 4’9” and 95 pounds, has a full head of hair again, stands strong, and trains regularly at her studio Let’s Roll Jiu Jitsu.

After being diagnosed with cancer, she underwent a double mastectomy, 18 weeks of chemo, and, 33 days of radiation. In spite of feeling sick and down, and at times being unable to get out of bed, she managed to keep her spirits up. Her radiation treatments ended on March 30, 2010 and 2 weeks later, she was back on the mat. Talk about fierce.

Datsusara 100% Hemp Gi Review

Written by

Review of the Datsusara HCG-03, the only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu kimono made of 100% hemp

Intro:
Datsusara is a gear company based out of California that specializing in making products out of hemp. They offer kimonos, gi belts, gear bags and clothing all made from 100% hemp. I was fortunate to be able to review their Hemp Combat Gi (HCG-03). There battlepack backpacks have gotten rave reviews from other bloggers such as Brendan at Gi Reviews.net and Seymour "Meerkatsu" Yang (including some awesome pictures of his kids inside the bag).

Datsusara is a Japanese phrase meaning "to leave the salaried/corporate worker's life". Chris K. Odell founded Datsusara in 2007 because, as an avid sports participant (in Mixed Martial Arts), he couldn't find gear that met his needs. Datsusara has a singular goal, to make truly functional, high quality gear. The Datsusara lifestyle means spending more of your time doing the things you love to do, and Datsusara is here to supply the gear.

Right out of the bag I could tell that this gi was something unique. This is the first unbleached gi that I've ever owned and also the first that is not made out of traditional materials (cotton). The impression that I got when picking it up and examining the gi was that of a heavy linen shirt and pants; the pants especially look and feel like linen. The weave of the kimono and pant both highlight the natural fiber characteristics of hemp.

Product Review: GI Soap

Written by

A Jiu-Jitsu Practicioner's Best Friend

Spending an abundance amount of time practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu comes with its share of many hurdles throughout the journey. One of the biggest opponents athletes must contend with is a faction of skin diseases consisting of Staph, Ring Worm, and Impetigo that are sure to cause serious damage to those that come in contact with it.

Aspiring to provide a strong defense to this dilemma is the Athletic Natural Care product known as “GI Soap”.  Taking his tragic experience of dealing with the issue creator Marcel Oliveira envisioned a product for helping out the grappling community.

“All products are made in small quantities so that we are sure that you will get the highest quality product without having to reach too deep into your pockets,“ Oliveira said. "We want to give back to the community and help out where we can, as well as helping our athletes progress.”

The products come in the form of a 5oz Soap Bar and 8 oz Body Wash all created with mixing ingredients of  tea trea oils, Olive oils, Coconuts oils and other elements to form an all-natural product capable keeping one healthy and most importantly staying in consistent action on the mat.

Jiu-Jitsu PED Survey

Editor's Note: Thank you to the nearly 700 participants in our online steroids study. The data collected was interesting but even more so was the information provided by the black belts and bloggers who answered our more lengthy questionnaire. If the numbers are too much of a bore move on to the Discussion section, read and formulate your own opinion. This topic is so faceted I am looking forward to the discussions still to come.

Some numbers to note: 143 of 690 people said they had used performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) in the past. That is 20%. Demographically, white belts and black belts were the least likely to have used PEDs.

My heartfelt thanks to Matthew Corley for the countless hours and tireless research to produce this paper.

Title:
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and the Culture of Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs): A Review of Online Survey Data

Author:
Matthew Corley,RPh

Abstract:
There is a persistent perception in high-level BJJ competitions that many medal winners are using steroids and other PEDs to succeed.  This article collates the opinions of nearly 700 BJJ practitioners and provides a detailed breakdown of the opinions of those participants based on their demographics.

Insight from current and former world champions was also solicited for a first-hand perspective on PED usage at the highest level.  The bios of the subject matter experts are available by hyperlink at the end of the article under the acknowledgements section.

What is Metamoris?

Written by

Metamoris Pro

Ralek Gracie -- Metamoris is a name we made up. Metamoris is the unity (clash) of styles (ideas) for the sake of art and competition, to honor those who refine their craft and bring it to the field for testing.

Metamoris Pro is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi competition October 14 in San Diego California. Among the notable names competing in the seven super fights are Andre Galvao, Roger Gracie, Buchecha, Kron Gracie, Jeff Glover, Caio Terra, Rafael Lovato, Kevin Casey and Dean Lister.

There is almost 100K in prize money. This is a professional event, this is not a tournament but seven prearranged super fights. These super stars are going to be paid to do what they love and what they have dedicated their lives to: Jiu-Jitsu. Competitors are paid according to their star power. There is a preset purse to show and another to win.

When it comes to super fights, there can be issues with the gray area around making weight. For example, back in May 2012 at the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, with the headline super fight Braulio Estima vs. Nick Diaz we still do not know what happened.

Ralek -- If one of the fighters does not make the preset agreed upon weight they forfeit 20% of their show money. That money is added to the other player’s purse. Now the other player gets to choose if he still wants to take the fight or not.
