Gi Review: Datsusara Hemp Gi

Written by

Datsusaralogo

UPDATE:

Just an update on our gis from myself, (Chris Odell) the owner of Datsusara. This a review on the older version and we have since then teamed up with OTM to make our new hemp gis. They should be out around late April. The improvements are... 1. No shedding issues. 2. Shrinkage is 5% tops all around. 3. The cut is tighter, like the OTM 420 gi 4. The stitching is top notch. 5 The collar is now foam and stiff but not HCK stiff :) Thanks for the post!

*Thanks Chris -BJJ Legends*

Renewable Resource Hemp BJJ Gi

I like the idea and the reasoning behind hemp products like this. It was very breathable and durable as a bjj gi for jujitsu. When I held it up to the light you could see how breathable it was, and when I wore it, it felt like I had awesome ventilation. I wore at least 2x a week to really break it in and the stitching held up. The four negative things about this gi were the stitching, odd shrinkage, shedding, and bagginess.

BJJ Gi Review: Stitching, Shrinkage, Fit

The stitching was very messy on this unlike a koral gi, a note that came with the gi even stated that. While it was durable it was very hard on the eyes. While black on black is hard to spot, once I saw this I could not stop thinking about it.

Now the shrinkage was the weirdest thing. I am 5'2 and 145lb so I have to shrink a lot of my A1 gis. I don't know if it is my dryer or something else, but the sleeve shrinkage was inconsistent. IE the some parts of the cuff were shorter than other parts of the same cuff.

The next thing that I noticed when I was training was the amount of shedding. The first day I was covered in black fibers and the mat space I was in was covered in it too. The more I wore it the less it shed, but it still shed.

The last thing that bothered me was the overall bagginess of the gi. The jacket was a little box like feeling on the chest. I'm not heavily muscled, but I'm nowhere near petite and I was swimming in it. The pants were baggy as well which is odd, because most gi pants fit me well other than length. The length on this one was perfect, it was just baggy.

I was really hopeful and excited about this bjj gi, and I had to take the chance. I hope the next version improves upon this gi. I really like the philosophy behind Datsusara and hope to see more of its products. The gear bags look great and so does the "utility belt". But I'll wait for more reviews before jump the gun.

Zé Radiola in Huntington Beach California Featured

Zé Radiola of Graice Barra PE (Recife Pernambuco) was in Huntington Beach California Tuesday night giving a seminar at Ricardo Testai's school, Gracie Barra Huntington Beach. I went to the seminar because Zé is the famous coach of Braulio Estima, who we interviewed for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Magazine, Victor Estima, Otavio Sousa an Lucas Rocha. I stayed for the second seminar because he is so infectious. View Pictures AND VIDEO TECHNIQUE!->

GUAM!

Guam shows at Jiu-Jitsu Pans

February 20, 2012 Cal State Dominguez Hills Carson California

Guam is a very small island in the South Seas with a population of 170,000. Mind you, Los Angeles has a population of 9 almost 10 million and the City of Orange CA (home of BJJ Legends) 136,000. So why were there so many competitors at the 2012 Pan Kids from Guam?

I spoke with Guam’s self-appointed representative Ramon Dela Cruz. He emphasized how the BJJ life style took hold of Guam in the mid-nineties with the dawn of the UFC. He describes how the fit culture fit the Guam lifestyle. Where there once was intermittent surfing there now was year round training with nice surfing on the side. In Guam, a vacation paradise, the businesses have embraced Jiu-Jitsu and come together to support their competitors with sponsorships and publicity   Read More>>

Caught our Eye: Cesar Hernandez Featured

Written by

True Jiu-Jitsu Heart

February 20, 2012 Cal State Dominguez Hills, Carson California

Congratulations to Cesar Hernandez and his gold medal finish at the USBJJF 2012 Pan Kids (Teen 2 Yellow Belt Middle.) Cesar has been training for about a year under Nova Uniao Las Vegas Coach Rod Wilson. Why I stopped to watch Cesar’s fight is because he fought both tenaciously and with ease. Then I overheard his coach tell the ref to make sure his opponent knew to tap on Cesar because Cesar can hear, he was born deaf. The family told me Cesar found Jiu-Jitsu though his dad who also use to train.

Congratulations Cesar!

Success Comes in all Shapes and Sizes

This win was for the women at SafePlace Austin by way of the Texas BJJ group Girls in Gis.

On January 22, 2012, twenty-nine women and girls traveled far and wide across Texas to attend Girls in Gis-Austin. Some traveled over five hours with their families to participate in the three hour BJJ training session. Black belt Fabiana Borges of Gracie Barra N. Austin hosted and led the instruction. In addition to providing a fun and friendly place to train, this event also served as the final collection drop off location for the GIG Wish List donation drive for SafePlace, Austin.

The Girls in Gis-Austin event began with a traditional Gracie Barra warm-up, fundamental Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu self defense techniques, a few sport Jiu-Jitsu techniques, drilling and concluded with structured rolling led by Borges'. "This was the best Girls in Gis yet! I really liked how Fabiana structured the training session. I had so much fun!" said Girls in Gis veteran Rebecca Varady of Gracie Humaitá Austin .

New Jiu-Jitsu DVD

“Size doesn’t matter” is a common catch phrase in BJJ. Also known as the “gentle art,” Jiu-Jitsu has been touted as the art that can favor smaller bodies because of its finesse and leverage and lack of technique based on strength.

However, as a 5’3 female grappler, I’ve often found myself doubting this when the human equivalent of a Mac truck crushes me into the mat while rolling. Like so many in my situation, bigger and stronger people have long been the source of much frustration during my Jiu-Jitsu journey.

Enter Grapplearts.com’s newest DVD release How to Defeat the Bigger, Stronger Opponent, taught by black belts Emily Kwok and Stephan Kesting.  Read More >>
