The world of mixed martial arts became abuzz the day the UFC announced the fight between boxing heavyweight champion James Toney and UFC Legend Randy Couture. The bout sparked debate across the internet.
Who would win between boxing and MMA?
James Toney felt confident that his hands would be enough to answer that question.
“I’m here to prove a point so people know that boxing is still running supreme over any discipline out there,” he said, prior to the bout.
Go Deeper than Gracies, A History You May Not Know of BJJ Featured
Written by Leonardo da SilvaOswaldo Fadda who was in the brazilian jiu jitsu for more than 20 years, is perhaps, the only practicioner who never received any instruction from any Gracie or any of their students. He learned while he was servicing the brazilian marines, from Master Franca Filho, who was a pupil of the famous Master Conde Koma who also tought to Carlos gracie senior.
Editors Note: bjj Schools can be hard to find, we like it when we see the art spread across the nation and internationlly. We feature new schools opening to help BJJ practicioners find schools when they relocate, or just want to know more. We like this school for the diveristy of BJJ, background of instructors and location. Enjoy, connect and check them out.
Kimura BJJ Tweaksbury Contact Info
Kimura BJJ under the watchful eye of Master Jean Kleber opened a new school in Tweaksbury, MA. The instructors, Bill Duffy and Fabiano, are experienced BJJ practicioners under Master Kleber. Bill is a Certified Defensive Tactics instructor in both MA and NH and a 20-year veteran of the police force. He has trained with Jean since 2004 and is a life-long martial arts practitioner and competitor. Fabiano has more than eight years of BJJ experience and has won competitions in both Brazil and the United States. Both instructors have also won regional and national gi and no-gi competitions.
We interview Bill Duffy about training, the new school and how a 51 year old can still be active in BJJ:
Megumi Fujii
Megumi Fujii has the most developed grappling game of the bunch. She trains out of Abe Ani Combat Club in Japan, and with Josh Barnett, the king of catch wrestling himself. She holds a blackbelt in jiu jitsu, and since she has a black belt in Judo as well it's not difficult for her to take things to the ground. Fujii has lightening quick submissions, including the Megulock (aka toe hold). She was a Pan Am Champion in 2004 and 2006, and in 2005 and 2007 she won third place at Abu Dhabi.

IBJJF Chicago Open Championship: A Good Start Featured
Written by Cassidee MoserOn August 22, 2010, Chicago hosted its first-ever IBJJF Open Championship. This inaugural event, held in a muggy gymnasium at Evanston Township High School, marked Chicago as a growing spot on the map in the bjj community. The competition attracted over 300 competitors and several teams, both from the area and out of state.
The tournament attracted over 20 teams, and the final top three overall winners were Gracie Barra in 3rd place, Carlson gracie team in 2nd, and the infamous Team Lloyd Irvin claiming first.
BJJ Across America: Tiger Martial Arts (Hilo, HI) Featured
Written by Jason WalterI find myself back in Hilo, where I grew up (yes that same Hilo where BJ Penn also grew up), for a few weeks before the journey across the Pacific begins. I contacted some friends and the consensus I received was that I had check out the new Charles Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy and Chris Smith. A Google, an email, and a phone call and I found myself making my way to the dojo where Tiger Martial Arts Hilo is located.
Kid Peligro Seminar and Top BJJ Tips Featured
Written by Michael SergiKid Perligro: A man with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu career that spans nearly two decades, includes authoring or co-authoring 16 books on the art, and training and learning with legends of the sport from Grandmaster Helio Gracie and Rickson gracie to young phenoms like Terere’ and Xande Ribeiro.
The ambassador of BJJ, who is largely responsible for spreading the word of the gentle art around the globe, recently dropped into an area of the country known more for college football than Gracie Jiu-jitsu. Serg Brazilian Jiu-jitsu / Team Roberto Traven located in Savannah, Georgia was fortunate to host Professor Kid Peligro for two seminars in August.
Does BJJ Qualify as an Olympic Sport? (2 of 2) Featured
Written by Cassidee MoserOne of the latest debates in Brazilian jiu jitsu is whether or not it could become an Olympic event at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
In order to qualify, the sport must meet certain criteria set up by the International Olympic Committee.
Unfortunately, Jiu Jitsu finds itself on the opposite end of several of these criteria. Probably the biggest obstacle for BJJ’s Olympic bid is the section of Image and Environment, defined as the sport’s ultimate image of credibility and equality in the public eye.
Let’s take the area of gender equality. While there is a growing number of top-level female competitors, they are still vastly outnumbered by their male counterparts. The numbers would have to even out a bit more in order to qualify.
Javier Vazquez (BJJ Black Belt) vs Semerzier: Video Featured
Written by BJJ LegendsJavier Vazquez, a Black Belt who started training in 1997, 15-4-0 MMA record fights at WEC 50. This is the unaired video available from Versus.com.
Just a fun match to watch the integration and execution of bjj and a good stand-up game. Javier takes his opponent apart placing pressure and emphasis on his weaknesses with a final submission that takes great technique to pull-off in that position.
Does BJJ Qualify as an Olympic Sport? (1 of 2) Featured
Written by Cassidee MoserEarlier this year, Rio de Janeiro was named host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Being the capitol and birthplace of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the announcement has begged the question from grapplers around the globe:
Could bjj be an Olympic Sport?
Several online petitions and campaigns have been started on behalf of the idea, and debate has lit up forums and message boards across the web.
The general sentiment is…
“Organized like a team. Fighting like a family.” is the motto of Gracie Barra. Founded by Master Carlos gracie Jr., gracie barra is the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in the world. It is no surprise that Honolulu would find itself home to a Gracie Barra with the most students on the island. In just over a year, Gracie Barra University of Hawaii (GBU) has grown to nearly 250 students.

JiuJitsu Will Travel: Flow with the Go Featured
Written by Jason Walter
By: Jason M.A. Walter for bjj Legends Magazine | The Beginning - Pan Ams 2010
I grew up believing that following your heart was important though societal norms seemed to indicate otherwise. Over the years, I have struggled with deep conflicts throughout my life as I was trying to fit in with what the world told me was “right.” At 26, I found myself young, unhealthy, and feeling dead inside. It was not until I realized that the shackles that were holding me back were invisible and of my own creation.
