Review: iThlete App Review...(Bringing HRV Into the Mix) Featured
Written by Matthew CorleyAthletes at the highest levels have access to the latest technology as they strive for peak performance. They and their coaches are monitoring multiple stimuli, both external and internal, to determine what training loads achieve the perfect balance between improvement and recovery. As we all know without adequate recovery you’re not going to be able to train effectively and your chances of injury increase. Recent innovations and products have opened the door so that even recreational athletes can utilize products that just a few years ago were cost prohibitive to all but well-funded athletic programs.
Heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring can be used to quantify your baseline level of fitness, track you daily recovery, develop a personal strategy for peaking, and identify trends from changes in your training regimen. HRV based program have been developed for professional athletes of all sports, including the UFC, and may represent the next step in individualized training programs.
An article was posted was posted earlier today on the future of Dan Hardy in the UFC and in combat sports. Please check out the full article if you’re interested. In a nutshell the CSAC failed Dan on a physical and discovered that he has Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome (WPW). Dan’s not getting surgery, feels fine and wants to keep fighting for another year or so. The information in this article is purely for entertainment value and is not intended to diagnose, treat or replace the advice of a qualified medical professional.
When I first started playing organized sports about thirty years ago we were all told that water was all you needed after and during practice (it wasn’t called training in those dark ages). Next came Gatorade. Gatorade has been around since the late 1960’s and really took off in the 80s when the formula was purchased from the University of Florida. Everyone was drinking Gatorade to “Be Like Mike” or whatever spokesman was popular at the time. Fast forward another decade and someone figured out that adding amino acids (protein) to these drinks may be an even better option after training. As you can see, this is not a new topic by any stretch of the imagination but I’m hoping that I’ll be able to give you a basic and practical guideline on what you need after training, why you need it and how to use it in your training.
My name is Adam Glass. I am 30 years old and I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you have heard of me before, it was probably not for BJJ. I am a white belt at Greg Nelsons Academy. BJJ is one of my favorite sports but that is not what I love most. I am a grip strength athlete and strongman. Many would make the argument I have pound for pound some of the strongest hands on the planet. My grip training roughly consumes 14-18 hours a week, 52 weeks a year. I tell you all of that to drill home one point – I know a lot about hand pain and how to resolve hand pain. I am going to share with you some of the best methods for improving your hand health and a few simple movements that will be high pay off for not only your BJJ but all areas of your life.
Many people who read this currently do not have hand pain and that is a good thing. Rather than pass this article over, I would like you to consider adding these movements to your training now. It is much easier to do these things and never get serious pain rather than develop pain and try to get yourself out.
Its time. There's a fervor in the air. The first major tournament of the year, the Pans. Before you leave home take a read and see if you may have forgotten anything.

The Gracie US Nationals Return to TheFitExpo January 19-20 in LA
Written by Kris ShawFor Immediate Release

The Gracie US Nationals Return to
TheFitExpo™, January 19-20
At the Los Angeles Convention Center
(Los Angeles, Calif…November 29, 2012) Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling tournaments will be front and center as The Gracie US Nationals return for their sixth year to the West Coast’s largest fitness event, TheFitExpo Los Angeles, Saturday and Sunday, January 19-20, 2013 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 South Figueroa Street, West Halls A & B.
As always, Rose Gracie will work in conjunction with the TheFitExpo to create the ideal environment and venue for a top-notch competition. TheFitExpo is bringing industry leaders together for a weekend of Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, fitness challenges and much more. On Saturday, January 19 at 12 noon, Rose Gracie will present their annual Achievement Award to the recipient who best represents the standards of the sport set forth by Grandmaster Helio Gracie.
“We’re honored to once again be working with Rose Gracie from the legendary Gracie family on hosting The Gracie US Nationals at our 10th Anniversary event,” said TheFitExpo Executive Director, Erin Ferries. “She always brings a classic competition that unites participants and attendees.”
In January 2012, Gracie made significant changes to the rules of both adult and children's competitions at The Gracie US Nationals, as her desire was to bring back the original Jiu-Jitsu that her grandfather, Grandmaster Helio Gracie, envisioned from the beginning. Gracie switched the point system to a submission-only event. This prevents several issues that were previously faced in competition and it gives the competitor 100% power over the outcome of the match. Also, in an effort to keep the sport pure, random testing of competitors for performance enhancing drugs will be done again this year.
Mindmap: Kron Gracie vs Victor Estima at World JJ Expo 2012
Written by Matthew CorleyThis post is a bit of an experiment to see if there is interest out there for more like it. A lot of you will remember the World JJ Expo earlier this year for the match that didn't happen but I'd like to look at one of the ones that did. The match between Kron Gracie and Victor Estima was a back and forth battle that wasn't decided until very end. I had a request to map it out and below is the result. It's a little unwieldy but still interesting.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending Hannette's all Women seminar in San Jose CA. The six techniques that we learned I never want to forget because I never want to have to learn them again! Her seminar is a balance of technique drill and spar. You work the positions you've learned. All the techniques chain together. It is so logical, Hannette could have a second career in computers if she wanted.
As for Andre, well I've never trained with him but if he's her coach...
Please attend tomorrow. Send me a Seminar review.Hannette Staak & Andre Terencio

Letecia Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Camp
I went to this camp in LA. Knocked my socks off my bare feet! I'm a black belt and I've been training for 15 years. I've trained with a lot of wonderful people. I have never trained with 4 world champions on the same day in the same room. If you've got an problem with your technique there WILL be someone in that room who's gone through it too.
My hat is off to the Gracie Humaita Women's team. They are an aspiration.More...
