There's been some buzz around Gracie Barra and their franchising changes that may soon come to their affiliates.  Link this to more information and at least one academy dropping from the GB ranks to join Gracie Humaita and  a recent decision to deny Gracie Barra their trademark on a logo submitted by a group called Gracie Barra Franchise Systems and there's some news.

Recent posts on BJJ Forums - such as this one on Jiu Jitsu Forums.com, indicate a change is coming. There's nothing tangible right now that we can point to, but the forum was buzzing in August and talk has been heard. GB, claims to have over 300 affiliated schools on 5 continents, which is a good size for any franchising organization

As you can see from the results, Alliance takes the top spot in Adult (which is Men).  Lloyd Irvin fallys to more than half the score for 2nd.

The Women's Class is won by Alliance, with Gracie Humaita coming in far behind and just beating Team Lloyd Irvin

Novice is taken by BJJ Revolution just edging out Nova Uniao..

Juvi's won by Pitgull BJJ.

Masters was won by the ubiquitous Gracie Barra...

Congratulations to all the winning teams and podium placements.. Excellent job.

It's the battle of the trademarks, Rorion Gracie - who has the Gracie name trademarked with everything BJJ and Gracie Barra, claiming Carlos Gracie Jr - as part of the name is a unique and distribuighed figure not to be bound by Rorion's early 1989 trademark.

And all of this in the wake of Gracie Barra rumours of franchasing fee increases, academies moving from GB to Gracie Humaita - is it all connected?  Probably, but it's all speculation - here's what we know about the trademark dispute....

Alberto Crane: Gracie Barra's First American Black Belt

Born July 14, 1976 in Santa Fe, New Mexico is Gracie Barra’s first American Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Alberto Crane. As a kid Alberto traveled and lived not just in America, he spent seven years of his youth living in Germany with his parents and two sisters. His first actual grappling partner was his older sister. He attended High School in New York, but his heart has always belonged to Santa Fe, New Mexico, that is the town he calls his home and its where his family resides.

Alberto did not begin Jiu Jitsu at an early age like many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts have, he actually played soccer, he did a little boxing and wrestling when he was in elementary school. It was not until he was 18 years old and after some friends who had been bugging him for six months to go attend a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class, that he finally got his first taste of Jiu Jitsu. “Once I did one class I was hooked! Then after I saw Royce Gracie, I saw the mixed martial arts, the vale tudo fighting and of course it pumped me up even more you know that I was doing something that really worked, that was really effective,” said Alberto Crane.
