George Birkadze: An Unlikely Fighter

Many martial artists, BJJ and Jiu-Jitsu practicioners have a day job.  Only a few make a living out of practicing their art. Meet George Birkadze, an avid martial artist who practices and teaches MMA fighting, grappling and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.  His day job is not what one can expect from such a tough BJJ guy.  George is a world famous ballet dancer, instructor and choreographer.  Martial arts helped him to survive tough teen years in Moscow where local bullies taunted him for being a dancer. Over the years this fighting hobby became something more—a life-long passion.

In a recent interview George opened up about his life in Georgia (a country in the Caucasus Region, former part of the Soviet Union).  As a young boy George started taking ballet lessons because he dreamed of traveling around the world.  In those years becoming a famous artist was the only way a USSR citizen would be allowed to travel anywhere outside of the Soviet Block.  When he was 15 years old, George received an invitation to study at prestigious Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia. While living in Moscow he encountered the bullies and started practicing Karate and Judo.  Around the same time he met and became friends with Feodor Emelyanenko, who later became one of the greatest MMA fighters in the world.

The Journey of Ricardo "Franjinha" Miller

Ventura, CA- Located less than a mile away from the sunny beaches of Ventura, CA is Paragon Jiu-Jitsu led by the legendary Ricardo “Franjinha” Miller. Paragon Ventura is a 4,400 square foot BJJ training facility equipped with full locker rooms, fitness equipment and plenty of mat space to roll jiu-jitsu.

The meaning of Paragon (Par·a·gon) is a model of excellence or perfection of a kind; a peerless example. That is exactly how Ricardo Miller likes to run his Jiu-Jitsu academy,  by setting an example for his BJJ students on and off the mats. Ricardo has been and still is very active in the BJJ / grappling competition scene, just recently taking home gold at the 2011 American Nationals in both the gi and nogi medium heavyweight senior 2 division.

Jay Hayes: Being a Good Training Partner

While most forms of marital arts rely solely on katas, forms, and constant repetition, in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu... most of the techniques we learn must be used with a training partner. Everyday on the mat we come in contact with different people each with their own unique style of doing Jiu-Jitsu, some providing a great help in our training, while others crippling our progression. Over the years there have been different opinions on what defines a good training partner. In an effort to find out the mystery to this question, I got the opportunity to interview someone that knows what being a good training partner all about...

Leticia Ribeiro Seminar Smashing Success

By Georgette Oden
Photos by Jen Sulak
Reposted with permission from Georgette's Jiu Jitsu World

On Saturday June 19, Leticia Ribeiro put on an incredible 3 1/2 hour seminar in gi techniques for the ladies of Texas... thanks to Triin Seppel, the Fenom Project, and Rob Ables, who runs the Marcelo Garcia affiliate in Dallas (Tiny Killer Robot Jiu Jitsu, isn't that awesome?) And these pictures are all by Jen Sulak, unless I say otherwise.

Leila, another blue belt at my academy, joined me for the 3 hour drive to Dallas which went quickly as we gabbed the whole way up. We arrived a little early, so we snacked in the parking lot before heading inside. Shama, our purple, was in town for the seminar already, and Christy, our academy co-owner, arrived just in time.

Gracies Go for the O.... Oprah

Could the Gracie's Move to TV?

Oprah is creating her own channel, about time you say, and she's or rather the channel is holding a view vote for best reality show idea.  This idea comes from Rener Gracie and addresses an issue that has been growing lately in publicity, not in occurance - Bullying.  Bullies have been around for ages - Mcfly - and will continue to be around and tournment, wedgies, dumpster plunge and push our heads into toilets.  What will save us, yes Jiu-Jitsu, and it's true.  Those of us who know, that martial arts, BJJ and grappling are an excellent form of self defense when taught correctly and studied with good intent.

So how does Oprah and the gracie's get together.. Bullyproof is an idea posted by Rener gracie where they take kids in bully - type situations and "Bullyproof" them with, yes, Gracie training in Calofornia.

Sounds interesting, and could be just the thing... you there - with your underwear up over your head... need..

vote now for your favorite show for the O - Channel.
